SHIP OF DEMOCRACY – Have always admired Howard Hanson’s “Song of Democracy”, a piece I became familiar with as a high school choral singer. I decided to revisit an excerpt of the powerful text of Mr. Hanson’s work by the quintessentially American poet, Walt Whitman and set it to music for mixed chorus and piano. These words were delivered by Whitman himself at the June Commencement of 1872 at Dartmouth University. The excerpt is from his poem “As a Strong Bird on Pinions Free” in which America’s freedom and strength are extolled. I hoped to capture the same majesty and powerful character as Mr. Hanson’s setting.
