Commissioned by the Boston Conservatory Vocal/Choral Intensive high school chorus, this piece was premiered in July of 2024. I was asked by Steven Spinelli, conductor of the chorus, to write a work that would be repeated each summer in the tradition of Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia” which was composed for the opening exercises of the Tanglewood Music Institute – a tradition that has continued since the piece was written in 1940. With some clear musical references to the Thompson, I chose to set the very compelling words of Rilke which remind us that music can speak where words are inadequate.
